Choir News
Calling all singers! There are openings in the Tab Ensemble, especially for TENORS (male OR female) and BASSES! If you’ve been waiting for an invite or are a little shy about singing, don’t hesitate. You do NOT need to read music, nor be an “accomplished” singer, just one who loves to sing and perhaps has some previous singing/choral experience. We rehearse three Wednesdays each month, 7:00-8:30 pm; some gather at 6:00 pm to share a meal. The schedule for January-May is below, worship services on the left, WEDNESDAY rehearsals on the right. Contact Holly at holmus [at] aol [dot] com if you are interested or have questions.

Rotations
The schedule is on the Greeter’s table, the fridge and the office & community room bulletin boards. Contact the office ASAP to get a copy or download it from the blog (see page 6). Please call or email the office when swapping dates (the info above reflects changes made), and check the schedule before going out of town! Now is also the time to contact the office about when you cannot be here on Sundays during the second quarter of the year (April-May-June). Please send all "blackout" dates for the second quarter to the church office (tabernacle@tabunited.org) by March 1.
Ash Wednesday and Bible Study Group
The Bible Study Group will host a meditation time for February 17, Ash Wednesday, at its regular meeting time, 5:30 pm at the Christian House. All are welcome to join the group. The Bible Study Group meets most Wednesdays, 5:30-7:00 pm at CA House (adjacent to Tab). To RSVP or get more information contact either Jean Erb (jeanerb (at) verizon (dot) net) or Nicole Diroff (nicolediroff (at) yahoo (dot) com). The Vanderbilt University Lectionary website has the readings for the current season.
Lenten Players
During each worship service in Lent we will be enacting a short theatrical piece of one to two minutes: mime, spoken word and dance. If you have interest in enacting during worship or collaborating, call or email Kip Leitner (see your 2010 Tab Directory).
Tab.Edu
February Tab.edu continues the 12-session DVD and web-based study of the historical Jesus and the Kingdom of God, featuring John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg. Topics include:
- Why did Jesus happen when he happened?
- Why the confluence of the Baptism movement of John and the Kingdom movement of Jesus?
- Why the confrontations in Jerusalem? Why then? Why there?
- What were the priorities of Jesus' proclamation of the Kingdom?
- How was the status quo of Roman imperial theology subverted by this obscure Galilean whose message continues to indict empire today?
The Christian Association at Penn has graciously offered the use of their space for viewing the DVDs and discussing the material, so the weekly Tab.edu sessions will begin at 11:45 am over at the CA each Sunday in this series, not in the Sunday School room at Tab. Study facilitators are Beverly Dale, Lynn Lees,Donald Wargo and Susan Wargo.
TabFlix at Home
Have you ever watched a good movie and wished you had shared it with friends? Then join us for TabFlix at Home. Starting this month, The Fun! Group will sponsor an evening of popcorn and a movie in a Tab friend’s warm home. The host chooses the movie, you provide any desired snack beyond popcorn.
The Collins/Quant Family is hosting the first TabFlix on Saturday, February 6 at 7:30 pm. RSVP to Susan. The movie will be either The Green Mile or The Fisher King (Note: both are adult-themed.) If you’d like to host a TabFlix, choose a date and movie and contact The FUN! Group.
Food Donations
Now that we are in the post-holiday season don’t forget that food donations are more needed than ever. Let’s bring in something for the food donation box next to the kitchen door each Sunday and help to keep those pantry shelves stocked! We have someone scheduled now to take the food over to the Cathedral every other Sunday (see the rotation grids) so let’s see what the Tab community can do!
Tab Online
Tab's website has info about affinity groups, events, news, a calendar, sermons, and more! Go to the Tab Blog on Livejournal to stay up-to-date on the current worship themes, to download forms and schedules (the rotations schedule, Time & Talent forms, Pledge forms, the choir schedule), or just take advantage of the links to the Tabernacle CafePress shop, the Arts & Spirituality Center, the Christian Association and other groups. You can read updates to the Livejournal through your own journal/blog or through email by signing up for the RSS feed or the Atom feed for the Tab Livejournal. You can also join the Tab Facebook group (just search on "Tabernacle" when on the site), which already receives the Livejournal posts via RSS feed.
FUN! Group Meets Again
The FUN! Group will gather on Sunday, February 28 at 9 am. Help plan events, build community, and enjoy some good time together when you join us at a table in the Community Room for treats, fun! and conversation. All are welcome and if you can't make it, please share your ideas with any member of The FUN! Group (see the list of members in the new directory).
Women's Week Event
A voice for justice, Bernice Johnson Reagon, the founder of the a capella group "Sweet Honey in the Rock" from DC will be speaking at Penn on Feb. 24 as part of Women's week. For further details see Beverly Dale, revbev@pobox.upenn.edu.
Sunday School Update
After spending over two years in the Hebrew scriptures we started with the Greek scriptures over Christmas. We focused on how Jesus, especially as a baby, was not your idea of a typical hero. The youth continue to amaze me with their honesty during our own Joys, Concerns and Calls time. They continue to astound me with their insights into God and human behavior during the "lesson". I am pleased to say that we are small, but mighty. ~ Susan Pierce
Worship Leadership and Pastoral Care
Suzanne Spaulding, who has been filling in for Patricia during December and January, will be moving on to do interim work at another church. For the month of February Jean Erb will be filling this position.
Message from Suzanne
Dear TAB Community,
It has been my pleasure and joy to fill in for Patricia in the past weeks. Thank you to so many who stepped up to the plate joining hands and hearts to fill in the gaps created by my previous commitments to supply preach elsewhere. Thank you for your support and words of encouragement. You are an amazing community and I feel privileged to participate with you and to serve you.
With peace and joy,
Suzanne
